I constantly hear calls for a playoff in college football. Proponents of the playoff claim that the BCS is not accurate, the current system is "broken", smaller programs like Boise State deserve a chance, blah, blah, blah...
There are a million reasons to have playoffs for the NCAA Football teams and all of them are dead wrong. There's no need for a playoff in college football, and this years college games prove it. Look at the final AP Poll released today and think about how wrong these rankings are. 1. Florida lost to Auburn! and not by a field goal - they got beat. Yes they played a good game against Ohio State, but it was a fluke. 9 times out of 10 Ohio State wins that game. 2. Ohio State LOST to Florida - you've got to be kidding me. How in the hell does that happen? And when you get your ass kicked that badly by a team that you should have rolled over should you really be ranked #2? 3. LSU lost TWICE in the regular season to Florida and Auburn. How can they be ranked HIGHER than the team (Auburn) that beat them and the National Champion? 4. USC LOST to UCLA - a team that is ranked #25 in the poll - so how can they be ranked in the Top 10? 5. Boise State is UNBEATEN and won the most exciting game of the year - they are clearly the #1 team in the country if there was such a thing as the #1 team - but there isn't.
What college football should do was detailed on this blog in January of 2005:
NCAA Football - There should be no ranking of College football teams - No such thing as a National Champion. No Sudden Death overtime in College Football. The Rose Bowl should always be Pac 10 champ vs. Big 10 champ. The Cotton Bowl should always be Big 12 champ vs. SEC champ. The Sugar Bowl should always be ACC champ vs. Big East Champ. There should be 3-5 other bowl games (Gator, Peach, etc.) the Orange Bowl should be abolished. There should be no corporate sponsorship of the Bowl Games. Half time shows should be restricted to marching bands. All Bowl games should be played on New Years Day.
